The first thing to do is to get into the habit of editing all metadata only in the DAM (PM+ or other). (for jpg files the metadata is written directly into the file). At the beginning the additional file bothered me, but they make sense and it is easier and faster to write a small file than to always open the original image file. It is good to use xmp sidecar for raw files. I will post my experiences in case some DAM nerds are listening -) Maybe I will try to split the catalogs now by genre or country, or give PhotoMechanic or Photo Supreme another try. To jump in and out of the catalog is a nightmare, if you can't have a global search. Recently I got a book project, where I need to search for images from the past 20 years. Compared to my workflow 20 years ago I did all my DAM in iView Media Pro 20 + Photoshop / Nikon Capture NX and it was running okay. Okay it's a little bit overkill, but as said, now we got 2022 and we got super fast computers. Probably I need more time than 30 days to test it. I have switched from Aperture to Lightroom and again to Capture One, because I don't like to rely on rental software and not be able to look at my archive, If I stop paying… I've tried Photo Mechanic +, but wasn't so happy with the GUI and workflow. but that's like 200 bucks, which isn't bad, but it's always something that's taking my Thanks for the input.Īfter Phase One announced to stop development at Media Pro (like Microsoft…), I got a little bit nervous, how could I run my DAM… Thinking about giving Photo Mechanic Plus a try. I have yet to find a DAM system for a large number of photos. So indeed, C1-22 definitely works with large catalogs, but it's just so slow. I'm working from a 16GB M1 Mac Mini, and have image previews set to 800. like 10 minutes to open, and about a minute after any click once it's loaded. Now when I open my 900k+ photo Capture One catalog, it's super super slow. I successfully converted the LR cat to Capture One (which took a few days). Thought process behind that was because it would be easier to search for photos in one catalog, rather than having to remember which year, then open that catalog to search. But rather than leaving the previous years catalogs along, I combined them all into one giant archive catalog of about 900k photos. Used Lightroom since version 2 and every year I make a new catalog. and converting the LR cat to C1 cat will take a few days (not hours or minutes). I want to have one master catalog with all my photo archive and use sessions for actual jobs, which will be imported after in this master catalog, if finished. What is possible nowadays in a DAM via Capture One without to wait for the rainbow spinning ball of death? Any experiences with catalogs of more than 500.000 photos? So, my question in 2022 with the new super powerful Apple M1, or an IntelMac with 64MB RAM. I have tested the new PhotoMechanic +, but was disappointed. I don't need to have access all the HiRes RAW files, but want to be able to see and search all my photos previews without jump between catalogs. So I started to merge them back into one big master catalog. My plan is to store this master catalog on an external SSD and make the previews only in 640px. I used to split my catalogs / libraries by year and country, but to search was complicated, if you have more than 20 years. Hi, I’m cleaning up all meta data in Media Pro, Aperture and Lightroom databases to make them ready for my move to Capture One 22.
